you don't need to do that. Edit the /var/yp/Makefile and find where it lists
all the maps to compile. You'll see that shadow and some other maps are
commented out. uncomment it, make your maps, check that nsswitch.conf
specifies nis for shadow and it'll work.

also:

if all clients are linux then set password mangle to true (or yes.. not
sure) at the top of the Makefile. This will remove passwords from the passwd
map. And you can configure ypserv to disallow non-root port access to the
shadow map, buying you a small measure of security.
