[ILUG] removal of thick borders & error 3:02

[linux user]

I just set up rh 6.0 
all the windows & icons have thick ( about the width of a scroll bar) border around them

i notice they don't have a the min max close buttons either

how do i set this up

btw with 5.1 if i get a kernel panic unable to mount root dir.
error 3:02 or 3:04 what does this mean

i tried the rescue & supp disks . mounted root as read only but failed to open a terminal. Does this mean i have to re-install linux
