OK, here's my recipe:

First, Sawmill requires a LISP interpreter library,
librep. It should install with ./configure, make and
make install. NOTE: configure scripts tend to default
to installing to /usr/local. This means the library
ends up in /usr/local/lib. Make sure this path is in
/etc/ld.so.conf. OR run './configure --prefix=/usr'.

Right. That matter sorted, you can install rep-gtk in
the same way you installed librep. Make sure
/usr/local/bin is in your path, or use --prefix.

Repeat for Sawmill itself.

Themes:
If you installed Sawmill to /usr/local, the manager's
data will be found in /usr/local/share/sawmill/0.24
(or other version number). There should be a 'themes'
directory under that path, too. Unpack the tarballs:

cd /usr/local/share/sawmill/0.24/themes
tar zxvf /home/downloads/sMac.tgz

(Just an example of one of the cute Mac-themes that
still haven't been banned.)
