Well for one, /var generally contains logging files that would probably be
open, even in single user mode, backing them up is OK, restoring is going to
be a pure pain, as they'll conflict with the currently open version (esp
/var/lock files) ... you'd be better off being more selective if you think
you need to back-up /var at all
/proc is based in memory and is a filesystem based access to kernel
parameters, again a backup of this will work, but restoring it could be
likened to restoring a windows registry file (sorry guys !) in a Harry
Enfield kind of way ("You didn't wanna do that !")
Did the third fall over on /dev perchance ?
That should explain the problems you had
