On stuff like the kernel it gives a fairly consistent 20% improvement
over gzip, so you wind up with a 12MB download instead of a 15MB one.
When I'm grabbing an image over a modem, this is a significant saving.
When I'm using a leased line to download, I tend to favour .tgz's
due to easier decompression and expansion via 'tar -xzf'. You can
do the same thing with 'bunzip2 x.bz2 | tar -xz' but it's a pain in
the ass ;-)
