Bizarrely enough, I had enough cues that I was on a remote machine from the 
fact that I'd used ssh -f remote-host xterm -T 'remote-host:ssh' and my prompt 
read something like:
   [12:04-~-2remote-hostT60]#
Like I said, stupid reboot trick.
