I have seen application/mac-binhex40, too, even in non-Macintosh email.
E.g. Eudora, at least older versions, allows users to choose MIME, BinHex,
and Uuencode (the MIME option apparently produces base64).
A mime decoder is certainly not a "little" project. You should
familiarise yourself at least with RFCs 2045 -- 2049. Have you
heard about emil?
