Identd is used for alot of different things like ftp, telnet, irc etc...,
mainly when you try to access a remote service, that remote service can
connect to identd's port, tell it what port the person is using to access
it, and identd will respond with the username that is currently accessing
the port it was given, here's an example:
i try to connect to irc.concentric.net using local port 1082 and remote
port 6667
Dec 15 03:15:37 elusion identd[936]: Connection from hyllus.concentric.net
Dec 15 03:15:37 elusion identd[936]: from: 205.158.23.2 (
hyllus.concentric.net for: 1082, 6667
so concentric.net connected to identd with the port informating and identd
sees what user is currently accesssing that local/remote port combination
and tells concentric.net what username is trying to connect to it.
