hey everyone...
i came home from school today to a nice letter containing Corel Linux.
The
way i figure it is when I was at laid i signed a computer spreadsheet. I
put
my address down and the sent me stuff...
Quite cool... if it wasn't for what was on the discs.
As soon as i got the discs i booted up my pc re-partitioned and whipped
it
on there.
>From the beginnning everything is graphical. Not a console to be seen. The
program really walks you through everything. The maximum install is only
300megs compared to the 1gig that is sitting on the RedHat 6.0 disc. You
can't choose anything apart from the packages to install. Start-up
processes
are defaulted to everything and kde is installed as default.
X didn't work right for me (it never does, i have a terrible graphics
card
(SiS 6202 which isn't directly supported)). In fact it damn right froze
everytime i tried to use it. When i logged in thu the console (provided
in a
lilo replaced gui) i noticed the shell had been messed around with.
Things
weren't werking the way they were supposed to. Commands weren't
registering
etc. Man pages were missing and a whole host of other problems emerged.
I saw this dist as being wayy too basic. I mean RedHat is simple enough
and
walks you through everything but this was ridiculous. It is simpler to
install than any other OS i have encountered and you are left to put
your
life in the hands of the designersmuch more than any thing else. At
least
with Windows you can slightly alter what happens.
>From what I have seen today, this OS has turned Linux into something to be
laughed at.
You don't know how fast I whipped CL out and RH in after all that.
Unfortunately though, my bad experiences could not be left at that.
One word of advice to you new Linux users: DeFragment. I didn't DeFrag
b4
installing CL and it cost me a heckuva lot of data and rendered my
system
pretty much useless.
I have no backups either (can't afford any :( ). So am I pretty much
fscked.
So to you people out there, get Fraggin!
Well, my rant is over with. I probably should've sent this to ILUG but I
don't get it any more. Way too much bulk. So I sent it here in the hopes
that I can help people from making the same mistake as me and execpting
alot
from CL.

See ya later people...

Ben
