I downloaded the tarball from the AOLserver site ages back but couldnt get
it
to work (in that I'm lazy and nieve and didnt realise that It wouldnt work
out of the box so to speak) But has anybody got any pointers
as how to set it up and what's needed to configure it on say, SuSE 6.x.

Regards
Robert

Nope.

AOLserver's cross-platform compatibility is excellent. In my last
job we took our directory (3000-odd sites, bigger than Doras) and
ported it from AOLserver/Digital UNIX + Illustra as database to
Linux 1.2.13 and some old Postgres as database. Plugged in a
different driver, set up the database pool with the same name.
Bang, it worked.

Don't be misled by the name, it's a kick-ass server that once cost
A Large Amount Of Money back when it was called NaviServer (much
better name). AOL liked it so much they bought the company, and
released the server (not code) for free. This was ages ago, *long*
before they even thought about buying Netscape. Recently they
released the source code too. Whee.

Tcl is a much better language for embedding into a server than
either PHP or Perl.
