{ I'm trying to make mp3's from a tape of a friends band, I have a
tape player with a cable going from the headphone socket to the
microphone socket of my sound card.
The mic socket is the default recording device under linux, yup.
You can use xmixer to select what to record from.
{ { How do I convert from "line in" to WAV file, are there plug-ins
for xmms which would allow the input to be accepted from "line in" and
the output redirected to a file?

Linux doesn't have a quality sound recorder. The ones I've found tend
to skip and miss out bits cause of the wait when writing to disk or
memory.
I've found a very small program (one c file) called vsr (Very Stupid
sound Recorder). Its the best i've found for linux as yet. It
uses semaphores, shared mem, signals... a lot of stuff. While it
doesn't produce excellent quality its good enough for my needs.
I've recorded radio for up to 3hours with no problem...
(2gig wav file generated 8), down to about 190meg mp3...)
It writes straight to wav files.
There isn't any real licence that comes with it so I'll not post it
and can't recall the link off hand. I found it off a linux sound
related page.

{ { Doesn't Linux call all hardware files? could I use xmms (or
mpg123) to "play" the file /dev/microphone (please correct this), and
get it to play to /dir/a_file.wav instead of /dev/sound.o
Though having said the above, for simple few mins mic recording one can
simply do a 'cat /dev/audio > audio.file' for a record. use sox
to convert to wav at whatever speed..
(the play command is just a wrapper script around sox under RH6.x)
{ { Is there a utiltiy to do this properly that I don't know about? {
(I've installed CorelLinux but am ditching it and going back to redhat
or SuSE pretty quickly)
sox - find it on freshmeat
or vsr (will see if I can did up the link) for longer recordings.
{
{ All mails appreciated,
{ thanks,
