If you are running RH and mgetty installed edit
/etc/mgetty+sendfax/login.config

there is a line commented out called /AutoPPP/, uncomment this, then you
don't need a script at all, just dialin and it notices a PPP connection
and starts pppd for you, then you let ppp do the authentication..
