There's really 2 issues here:
(a) the US PTO is willing to allow patents on the most obvious crap
(b) Amazon are willing to use those obvious patents to sue their
competitors.
Amazon has, in (b), certainly used a dodgy system to beat up their
competitors in traditional robber-baron style, so they're not playing
fair.
