Keys with the GNOME (or KDE) logo could be made in quantity
for pence. Custom designs could probably be done for a tenner
(send us a PNG and we'll make a keycap).
Anyway, it _is_ possible to use the windows keys under X.
You need to use xmodmap to give it a keysym.

Ahh, it requires changes in GNOME.
Maybe you could create a hotkey in GNOME that binds the
windows key to an app the talks to the panel and asks it
to pop up it's menu. Or, if getting focus to the panel
is a problem, perhaps this app could get the menu hierarchy
from the panel and display the menu itself.
