The same thing would have happened here in Ireland if the kid was here
rather than in Norway. Ireland has some very good reasons for keeping
the US a happy camper here.

{ irish media, what percentage of the market must linux take before

Seems the linux community is still very young in both age and age group
in Ireland at least. Those in the US have come a lot further.
The older of us have had previous unix exposure and so have more
experience, thus leading to higher paid jobs. Face it a contractor is
going to get more working on a commerical unix job than a free one.
Europe as a whole has tended to be more conserative than the US in many
respects. This is clear in the technology front (other than adopting
some better protocols, gsm...). This conserativeness leads to a slower
adopting of newer technologies and products used in mainstream industry.
That said, it can be that the european is more liberal and flexible
than the US (re crypto). This together with a fast growing younger
population, the newer stuff will gain favour faster than in previous
times.
