I've done the following:
Deleted all the 2.2.14* files in /boot
Edited /etc/lilo.conf to just say vmlinuz, instead of vmlinuz-blah
cd /usr/src
mv linux linux-sucks
Downloaded 2.2.15, extracted into /usr/src/linux
cd /usr/src/linux
make xconfig
make dep clean modules modules_install install
reboot

Funnily enough, I can now run vmware-config fine.
