That seems to be the way the Unix network (SunOS/Solaris) at work is set up.
All mail gets delivered to /var/mail/NAME on your desk machine but - like
your home directory - is available via NFS on any other machine. As others
have pointed out, there seem to be pitfalls in this setup, however, "our"
setup seems to work fine (inclusing using procmail and the likes).
But then again, I'm not the SysAdmin, so I have no idea through which loops
they had to jump to get it working... :-}
