What way is your system set up in terms of SCSI buses? I spent large
chunks of my weekend fighting with my system 'cos its SCSI zip drive
is on an adaptec controller that gets seen by the system before the
symbios controller that my disks are on. The fix for me was to compile
the symbios driver into the kernel, and the adaptec driver as a
module, so the the disks got numbered as sda and sdb. If your root
filesystem is not on the same SCSI bus as your Zip drive, this is
likely your problem.
Question for people more familiar with the Linux kernel's module
strategy - how to I make my SCSI CD, CD-RW, Zip and Tape dependent on
the Adaptec so that its module gets loaded when any of those devices
gets accessed. Or, better yet, can I 'wire down' which targets on
which buses get mapped to which devices (as you can on FreeBSD).
