Generally for Windows users the MTU is 1500, this is generally considered an
"Ethernet standard" afaik, while the internet standard is actually 576,
although generally it's advisable to use 1500. 
What it depends on is the frequency of sites which use what MTU. If the
frequency of sites you visit use 576, it'd probably be advisable to switch to
that MTU. AFAIK Windows 98 has some detection thinger-ma-jigger which can
detect whether ur connection should be 1500 or 576.
