I mentioned the same when visited Ireland (Dublin, UCD)
in '95. I hadn't much non-academic contacts, but in the
academic environment the phenomenon was obvious. This
was suprising also to some other people from abroad, e.g.
from Italy... Probably, some kind of south/north diversity
of perception? 8)
