Or you could set 'ruler', which displays the cursor postion on the command
line.

Vim has line() and col() builtin functions which can be used to return the
line and column of the cursor. They can also be used to get the line and
colunm of a particular mark. See ':help col()' and ':help line()' for the
full details. ':help functions' will give you the full list of builtin
functions.
