Yes there are a couple on the market that will plug into
either the parallel port, serial port or USB. I saw one when
I was in the States two weeks ago.

With all the digital cameras out there now, these seem to be more
popular.
Don't know about Linux support though.
Anyway I can understand way people would go for compact flash, but
what about smartmedia or Sony's memory sticks.
