For what its worth, there is "Low Bandwidth X", something that I never
played with though. man lbxproxy and friends, catch here is that the Xserver
has to support it. I have absolutely no idea if it is any good, or how it
achieves its goals. There are some docs on it floating around in ftp.x.org
(if that url still exists, which gives you some idea of when it was that
I looked into it last)
