I think they use a binary format for the database, it just has a lot of XML 
input/output facilities.

There seems to be bog all in between gdbm and SQL server for Linux. I tried 
freshmeat without much luck, I hadn't realised how bad their search 
facility was. "database" turned up 641 hits so I tried "database library" 
and got 1400. "+database +library" gave nothing and "database and library" 
gave around 8000!! You'd think such a high profile site would have a decent 
search engine (and would eliminate "and" from it's list of keywords!)
