Eoghan,
hmmm there is software/libraries available to do just this kind of
thing. I haven't seen shareware versions but if you go to
http://www.innerx.com/ you can purchase "a professional multi-database,
cross platform, C++ class library designed to provide powerful access to
most SQL and non-SQL database systems with a single set of code" (source
available). It can be used on win16/win32/UNIX and OS2. Evaluation only
avail. on Win though. Zinc dataconnect is another one
(http://computers.software-directory.com/cdprod1/swhrec/021/148.shtml).
Unfortunately it seems nothing in this life is free. Fancy writing
such an animal and releasing the source yourself ??? You can download
evaluation software that sounds like the business from
http://www.trifox.com/.
Sorry, having read these it seems like nail and sledgehammer time.
There should be easier ways . . . How about, size/live data dependant,
working on flatfile exports from the DB, that would be quickly do-able, even
if you reimport them to a Linux DB afterward. If you're badly stuck I'd
almost guarantee your answer to be in here http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/
somewhere, http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=perl-dbi&m=93750145811875&w=2
begins "[In response to a question about how to access MS SQL Server on NT
from a Linux machine.]There are basically two paths you can take, neither of
which is ready for prime time. You can use DBI::ProxyServer on the NT
machine and DBD::Proxy on the Linux machine. The major drawback with this
option is that of the three modes in which ProxyServercan be run:" and then,
well continues. Quite extensive threads regarding said topic, if you have
time/inclination to look through them that is. Let me know how you get on.
Diverging,
Steve

Subject: [ILUG] Unix -> NT Databases ?
Hi,
I need to run a query on a MS SQL 7.0 database on an NT server
from Unix.
I know I can use ODBC with Perl DBI, but this involves running
a 'dbiproxy' on the NT side.
(
tlowery.hypermart.net/perl_dbi_dbd_faq.html#HowDoIAccessMSWindowsDB )
Has anyone been able to query an NT database without running
anything on the NT side or have any alternate solutions ?
Thanks.
Eoghan.
