You're doing the right thing, but LILO doesn't timeout once you start
typing. Do you get the
LILO boot:
prompt (EXACTLY as above) or do you just see LILO ? If just LILO, then you
need to press any of the [Shift], [Control] or [Alt] keys within the timeout
time. Perhaps there is no timeout set ? In that case, hold down [Shift]
while booting (or turn [CapsLock] on and then when LILO starts you should
get the
LILO boot:
prompt. At that, you then need to start typing within the timeout. If none
of the above work, then you must boot from some other medium (e.g. Tom's
Root/Boot disk, or the Linuxcare bootable CD) , mount the root partition
somewhere and manually edit /etc/passwd and possibly /etc/shadow.
