Buggered if I know. All the kit is supposed to be auto-sensing 10/100 Mbit
but the switch and the G4 won't conclude a negotiation. Which is wrong - the
switch or the G4 - you tell me ? Is there a difference between a switch port
and a hub port as far as auto-negotiation is concerned - I hardly think so,
but I don't know.

It's a cheap switch, and the manual is utterly useless. Haven't looked at
the G4 manual but I KNOW that it won't have that kind of detailed
information - Mac users are not expected to need to know that, so they're
not told.
