Here's my two sense ( *snigger* ) as a part-time marketroid - LAID is geek-funny
but not really marketable to the press. The sexual connotations are too heavy.
The "Tux got LAID in Cork" thing says to me that Tux met a lady of questionable
virtue in Cork (lcky bastard). Maybe that's just my dirty mind, but I reckon
that that's what 90% of men will immediately think, and as the AGM demonstrated,
unfortunately 90% of "Linux people" are male. The only way to make the "born"
thing obvious is to use a logo that shows an egg cracking. Which would either be
a) pretty good, or b) damn silly. I haven't decided yet. And it's not really
accurate anyway, so I think it should be knocked on the head.
Donncha tells me that Peter suggested something like "Irish Linux Day", which I
think goes to the opposite end of the spectrum (no offense Pete if you're
there) - it's not marketable. The meeja love a good name to put in the headline,
and I'm sorry, but "Irish Linux Day" just wouldn't catch my attention. But then
again, the meeja in Ireland are somewhat unpredicatable (and un/misinformed), so
you never know what you're going to get off them.
I would suggest, however, that the name should be decided once and for all ASAP.
Apparently LAID was quite successful (almost, but not quite, before my Linux
time), and it would be nice to build a yearly event around it, that will build
in time. If Linux awareness continues to grow, it should get bigger and better.
But if you change the title year after year, people will get confused., and that
won't help at all.
My own suggestion? "LEXPO" and/or "Linux Expo" (you could use both for marketing
purposes). Donncha isn't mad about it, but I am. I thought of it earlier this
week and it's grown on me. And I'll sulk if ye choose something else... :)
