Interesting. If I go by what my modem[0] reports, the mean would be 46667bit/s
(I usually get 46667 and about the same number of 43xxx as 48000
connections) - does that mean I can simply consider myself lucky?

[0] ELSA MicroLink 56k basic with latest firmware upgrade[1], hanging off
many, many meters of 2x0.5mm^2 cable to connect it to the phone
outlet...
[1] absolutely necessary with that modem - wouldn't do more than 33.3kbit/s
reliably without it
