[ILUG] Renaming the ILUG

[ILUG] Renaming the ILUG

Colm Buckley colm at tuatha.org
Thu Mar 9 11:17:36 GMT 2000

Hmm.

I think that renaming/redefining the ILUG to "broaden our focus" would
*not* be a good idea. Whatever our individual interests, it is the
Linux operating system which brings us together; our interest in it, its
capabilities and its promotion. Broadening our base means lessening our
focus. By all means, concede to RMS that the environment should
correctly be referred to as Linux/GNU or GNU/Linux (but not LiGNUx), and
make any necessary adjustments to the web page... but it is the word
"Linux" which strikes a chord with people, and which everyone recognises
as emblematic of Free Software / Open Source Software...

Pragmatism and idealism are not *necessarily* conflicting here. If they
are, remember that idealism makes martyrs while pragmatism makes
results.
