Not to mention the fact that frank discussions of the comparitive
merits of Free OSes (say, as a random example, OOM handling in FreeBSD
v Linux) would be on-topic, and we saw how popular that discussion was

This is a group of people interested in Linux, and it's foolish to
pretend otherwise. By all means, refine the terminology to GNU/Linux
if you're convinced it's appropriate, but don't try to pretend you
(plural) is are something you (plural) are not.
