Whatever, yes it's monitor plug&play. RH included some {DDC,DCC} code in
RH6.1 or so. Eg it picked up my ADI monitor, and set up the most perfect
1280x1024 resolution i've seen on it.
XFree 3.9 also has some {DDC,DCC} stuff in it, and iirc it's supported
by a number of driver modules, eg Matrox. No idea whether it's used per
default though, maybe you need to tinker with the config. Best check the
XFree release notes.
