Hmm.. you could do worse than look at the SB Live... it has hardware sound
mixing, which is enabled under the linux drivers (just keep opening
/dev/dsp)...
doesn't solve the NAS/ESD network audio problem, but at least you don't need
esd to do sound (unfortunately all the damn gnome programs insist on using
it,
and under Alpha Linux, esd is broken :()

However, playing multiple sounds, and still having xmms running in the
background
is fun.
