Just as some reference point: Earlier this year, I revived a 386 as a
firewall/dial-up/masquerading machine and managed to get Red Hat Linux 5.2
installed in less than 150MB. That machine has no NFS, though, as the only
access is through ssh. Also, there is no X. On the other hand, it does have
some extras you won't need, like possibly ssh, mason and masqdialer and I
didn't remove every single unnecessary RPM, I think (so there's room for
improvement). So, yes, it's definitely possible.
