I've often wondered about this. When you buy, for instance, an MPEG car,
do you get source code - I'd hazard a guess that you don't. I once saw an
interview where someone asked one of these people about source
availability and there was serious humming and hawing. My take on it is
that these people are basically ignoring the GPL when it suits them and
no-one has called them on it.
