Haven't used a laptop for a while, but I do recall on the IBM600 models,
XFree86 wouldn't support this feature. Ended up downloading a free binary
from matrox(?) which did the trick.
What graphics chipset has the laptop ? Perhaps a commercial (perhaps free)
binary may help.
