IIRC switching hubs have a breakdown inside of something like

1 2 3 4 | 5 6 7 8

where 1 2 3 4 share the same segment, and 5 6 7 8 share another one. There
is then a 2 port switch to connect the two segments. Can produce better
performance, but not quite up there with a full switch (where each port
has the full line speed to itself). A hub has the bandwidth shared
between all ports (so if there's a hog on one port, the rest have to
suffer).

164 doesn't sound too bad, I paid 210 or so for a 16 port 100Mb hub, and a
friend
paid around the same for an 8 port 10/100 switch. That said, Dabs have:
FS108 (10/100 switch) from netgear for £112.00, which is ~ 180 IEP.. for a
full switch.

Regards
L.
