[ILUG] Proxy Servers @ Irlgov

[ILUG] Proxy Servers @ Irlgov

Afternoon All,

Would anyone know where I could get some documentation
on which Proxy is best.

I am currently working with some Government sites and
in the process of reccomending a stable proxy server
as a new standard.

They are currently usin M$ proxy server and it's
causing major hassles in terms of performance +
various NT issues.

I would like to recommend Squid on Linux but need to
know first, how easy it will be integrating NT user
Groups/Accounts on Linux for authentication.

The sites currently have an Internet users group who
are allowed access the proxy server. I would like to
take theese users/groups accross with some kewl
utility and do away with NT authentication.

If I set squid to allow access to particular
users/groups how exactly do I authenticate,

Do I supply a username + password in my browser window
when attempting to establish an Internet connection.

Or can I do it like NT does, If a user is part of a
group that the proxy allows access, no further
authenticationis required. ??

Any help what-so-ever is appreciated.

I would also appreciate if anyone could tell me where
to get some documentation on how cool squid is versus
M$ proxy. The It people here will not take my word for

it, the want facts on paper.

PS: I feel it is a good way to get Linux moving in
Ireland if theese guys go for it.

Thanks

Mark
