[ILUG] multiple file upload to Apache

I know you can have multiple "browse" buttons on a web page to upload
files but I'd like to be able to open a file requester (from the
browser) and shift select a number of files to upload to an Apache web
server. 
FTP is out of the question unfortunetly, and it's looking increasingly
like it'll be a Java solution. Has anyone implemented this kind of thing
before?
