Just got home and had a chance to try reconfiguring X.
32bpp is not an option, as the Neomagic256AV does not support it (or at least one of the video chipsets on the card does not.) Tried 8, 15, & 16, but for some reason it keeps going back to 24 by default. Thanks for the tip. I've obviously missed something when re-configuring.
