Thanks for the great advice but I ended up rebooting the machine. Even
that gave trouble, (wouldn't reboot and had to hard reset, unmounted any
filesystem I could first though!) but things are back to normal again.
Except for my lovely uptime *sob*
Still, another machine has 129 days :)
