You can use Xconfigurator xf86setup or - if you are well-hard, you can do
it manually. (BTW, you can sometimes toggle through resolutions, by
hitting ctrl-alt-keypadplus and ctrl-alt-keypadplus).

There is a file, /etc/X11/XF86config that has the screen resolutions
defined in it. There is a "Screen" section or two; you have to find the
definition for your setup.

It may look like this (if you are using an "SVGA" card - do tell what
video card you have, so we can be sure);

Section "Screen"
    Driver "svga"
    # Use Device "Generic VGA" for Standard VGA 320x200x256
    #Device "Generic VGA"
    Device "My Video Card"
    Monitor "My Monitor"
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 16
        Modes "1600x1200" "800x600"
# Virtual 800 600
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Driver "svga"
    # Use Device "Generic VGA" for Standard VGA 320x200x256
    #Device "Generic VGA"
    Device "My Video Card"
    Monitor "My Monitor"
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 8
        Modes "1600x1200" "800x600"
# Virtual 800 600
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
EndSection

The section you are interested in would be the "Modes" section. You
should choose something that's listed in the "Modeline" section. It's all
a bit complex, so maybe stick to the configuration programs for the moment
;)
