Before you do that, would this be of any help?
SGI have a tool called fam, which along with a kernel patch will notify a
program of updates made to it by other programs. It is one of their
open-source offerings, and is currently used with efm, the enlightenment
file manager, (which is very good by the way, for the stage that it is in,
and well worth checking out, even if it is just for the transparent menus).
I don't have the link offhand, but you should be able to find it from
www.sgi.com
