StarOffice? Would like to hear Kate's opinion on this, but IIRC, it needs 141MB, approx 160MB to run without swap. All I've ever heard is that it runs well on 128MB, and that being a minimum. Good luck. I may be a newbie, but Im sure I'm correct on the mem issue. Can give you real-world results on Saturday as I just ordered a boatload of SO-DIMM.  BTW, NScape sucks up 35MB. A good few posts regarding both SO and the issues you're facing within the last week. Wouldn't hurt to have a look at them.
