It is quite likely that he is not burning a copy of the image but rather
taking a copy of all the files that are on the CD.  This is likely to
cause the problem you are experiencing (most of the commercial burn
packages come with a copy utility).
Of course using a *nix system to make your copies could remedy the but
is going to take a bit more effort.
Alternatively you could generate images of the CDs using dd (use a block
size of 2048 and make sure the CDs are burned as Mode 1) and have him
burn the images to disc.

Just a thought.
