it wasn't a beowulf cluster. it was 200 DEC Alpha's networked together[1].
Initially half (iirc) ran Linux, and the other half NT.
as the rendering went on, they moved more and more of the NT machines over
to Linux, because of the vastly superior remote management capabilities of
Unix vs NT. iirc at the end less than 50 out of the 200 machines were
still running NT. :)
