Here I use proftpd http://www.proftpd.net/ - basically it claims to to be simple to configure, secure, as scales well with loads. Haven't had any real experience to counter these claims. YMMV.
 ftp, especially of the anonymous variety is a security nightmare, and best avoided if possible.
