I have a box with an SMC Ultra (WD-8390) network card on which I run Linux
occasionally (it's the box the children play games on). I hardly ever sit at
its console, only accessing it via Ethernet. But the network card doesn't
like mornings :-) When I've turned it on, and it's up and running (XDM box
displayed) I try to ping it and it takes quite some time before it first
responds to a ping - after that, everything's fine. Now this is only a minor
annoyance, but I'm curious as to what might be causing it. I momentarily
thought that it might be due to a delay while autoloading a module, but what
would have triggered the autoload - network traffic - detected by the
network card and driver :-) So obviously it's not an autoload thing, but
what is it ?

Niall
