Useless use of cat alert (especially in a sig, and
such a profound one at that) :-)
Better to do:
<life grep -vi mel > sanity
or
grep -vi mel >sanity< life
or
grep -vi mel <life> sanity
as for your linking problem, I don't think you can fix
things just by stripping certain functions, because
of inter-library dependencies etc. And even if you could
you would only be causing more hassle for yourself in
the long run in my opinion. Obviously you haven't access
to the source, but could one of the lib vendors release
a version to you with exported function names changed
with a prefix so there is no name clash?
