Hi,
After fiddling around with RH6.2 for the last few months, and annoying this
list with some silly questions, I'm finally taking the plunge, and gonna
install RH7 to run two boxes. - One firewall, and one mail and samba server,
and mabye my laptop, if I could get X set up right !
I'd appreciate advice on the following:
<deep breath>
I have an email server on my lan, which gets smtp mail from my isp (static
IP), and services pop3 email clients. I had been thinking of simply putting
the firewall between my lan and the outside world, but now I'm wondering how
this will work ! - If my firewall dials up and gets assigned a static IP
address, will the smtp mail not be attempting to connect to this IP (i.e.
the firewall) on port 25, to dump in it's queued email, instead of the mail
server machine, - or can I get all port 25 stuff from my isp's relay(s)
forwarded to the local ip of the mail server ?
Mabye I'm missing the point.
Also, is it safe for me to leave my mail server on the one lan with all my
w98 clients, and allow smtp to it from the specific IP addresses of the mail
relays, or should I really be creating another subnet with just the mail
server and a second nic in the firewall - This seems a bit overkill, as I
dont need to allow any access to the mail server from outside my lan, apart
from getting the mail from the isp, of course.
With all of the above in mind, I have about 6 gigs (of w98 users' backups
and stuff) on 3 or 4 dos partitions which I want to make available to w98
users through samba. Before I go off and move it all, can I keep these dos
partitions, and simply share them from samba, or do I have to start off with
a clean machine ? -
Next problem - I have a 15GB ide disk, which is currently configured as an
8GB disk in my w98 setup. What do I have to do to get at the other 7Gigs, or
will my linux be magically able to see it ?
Any and all advice will be most welcome.
Thanks,
Declan
